The January table in a family office

January sittings fail when household drawings, plant cash, and a renovation sit in one argument. Separate maps, then one conversation.

Families that own a company often try to plan the household, the plant, and a flat renovation in a single January sitting. The sitting then becomes a referendum on character. Money that was always going to school fees is described as if it had raided the warehouse.

Three maps, one afternoon

We put household, operating, and property on three sheets that still add. The addition matters: a family that refuses a total will not see that a renovation deposit and a dividend sit in the same fortnight. The separation matters too: a cousin who does not work in the plant should not have to defend a packaging delay.

Who is allowed to speak

Name the people before the day. A sitting that grows by two uncles at the door will not finish the year. If a branch will not share figures, we draw a blank with a label. Pretending a blank is a round number is how January becomes a grievance in June.

What January is for

January is for drawings already promised and for the few purchases that cannot slip. It is a poor month for reinventing a shareholding. Keep that work with counsel, on another date, with different paper.
